Food Northwest Awards 2008

Anne Benson wins Leapfrog Award for Raising the Image of the Food and Drink Industry

Anne Benson is an experienced journalist and PR professional who also happens to have a passion for food.

Anne, who is based in Wirral, has merged her professional and personal interests to great success through her pro-active campaigns to raise the profile of local produce and local suppliers.

As well as using her restaurant reviews, newspaper columns and magazine writing to shout about what the North West has to offer food fans, she took a highly active role when she became chairman and publicity officer for Wirral Farmers’ Market.

This voluntarily-run enterprise now has the reputation of being one of the best markets in the region. In 2005, it won the British Urban Regeneration Award for its contribution to the area, and in 2007 it won Best Farmers’ Market in the UK at the BBC Food and Farming Awards.

Anne was also a founding member of the Wirral Food and Drink Festival, which attracted around 23,000 visitors in 2007 as well as achieving high levels of good publicity for the area. Her work was recognised when she won the Wirral Tourism Ambassador Award.

Anne is still active in journalism, writing about regional and local food for Liverpool.com magazine. She is now also helping to promote the region and its food and drink in her new role as Food Tourism Consultant for the Mersey Partnership.
